how can I control the x-axis tick labels

I am trying to generate a plot whose x-axis values are the following:

 data_out[,1]

I cannot get my ploy start with the tick label "1". Surprisingly it keeps starting from 0 regardless of the usage of the graphic parameter xlim.
I tried many different combinations of the parameters appearing in the plot instruction.
I also tried to sort the x-axis value in increasing order.

How can I get the x-axis tick labels to be (a subset of) the x-axis values, that is:

Try:

   plot(    , xaxt='n',   )
   axis(1, at=c(1,2,3,4,5, ... all the rest of them ...) )

You might also need to use the  label argument to axis()
